What is a product listing? (and what makes a complete one)

A product listing is the single page that presents one item for sale, and a complete one answers a buyer's questions before they have to ask on WhatsApp.

What a listing is

A product listing is the page for one product on your store: everything a customer sees and reads before deciding to buy. If your catalogue is the shelf, a listing is the label, the photos and the salesperson all in one.

A complete listing has five working parts. Let us walk through them with one product, a hand-painted terracotta diya, as an example.

1. Title

The title says what the product is in plain words. "Hand-painted Terracotta Diya, Set of 6, Red and Gold" tells someone exactly what arrives. "Festive Magic" tells them nothing. Our post on product title formula for Indian sellers gives a pattern to follow.

2. Photos

Show the diya from the front, from above, in a hand for scale and as a set of six together. Add one shot in use, lit on a window sill. The post on how many photos each product should have helps you decide how many are enough. Keep the first photo clean, since it is the one people see on the product grid.

3. Price

Show the price clearly, including what is and is not part of it. If delivery is charged separately, say so on the page rather than surprising the customer at checkout. If you give a bundle or a quantity price, spell it out.

4. Description

Answer the questions you get in DMs. For the diya these might be:

  • What size is each diya, in centimetres?
  • What is it made of, and is the paint safe to use with a flame?
  • What oil or wick suits it?
  • How is it packed so it does not crack?
  • What do I do if one arrives broken?

Put the answers in short lines or bullet points that read well on a phone. Our post on what details to put in every product description has a checklist, and how to structure a product description for mobile shows layout.

Be honest. If the paint may differ slightly between pieces because it is hand-painted, say that. It sets the right expectation and avoids returns.

5. Variants and stock

Variants are the choices within one product: colour, size, pack count. A diya might come in a set of 6 or a set of 12, in red or in blue. Each combination can have its own price and stock count. Do not make three separate listings for something that is really one product in three colours. Read product variants, colourways and sizes and variant or separate product, how to decide.

Extras worth adding

  • Care and usage instructions.
  • Weight and dimensions of the parcel, which is useful for shipping.
  • Your return and exchange summary.
  • A link to your delivery details.

A final check

Before you publish, read the page as a stranger would. Could they decide to buy without asking you a single question? If not, add the missing line. A listing is never finished the day you write it. Each time a customer asks something new, improve the page so the next customer does not have to.
