What is UPI? (and how sellers use it to get paid)
UPI lets a customer pay straight from their bank account using an ID, a QR code or a collect request, and sellers use it both through a gateway and directly.

UPI, the Unified Payments Interface, is a way to send money from one bank account to another using your phone. You do not need to type account numbers. The payer uses a UPI ID, scans a QR code, or approves a request, and the money moves. For a small seller, it is often the easiest way to get paid.
The ways you will see it
- QR payment. You show or send a QR code. The customer scans it with any UPI app, enters the amount and pays.
- UPI ID. The customer types your UPI ID, like `yourbrand@bank`, into their app and pays.
- Collect request. You raise a request for an amount, the customer sees it in their app and approves it.
All three end up in the same place: money moving from their account to yours. I will not describe limits or rules, since they change. Check your bank and the UPI app you use for the current ones.
A seller sharing a QR on WhatsApp
Imagine Rekha sells hand-embroidered stoles on Instagram. A customer messages to buy one.
- Rekha confirms the stole, the price and the address.
- She sends her QR code image and says, "Total Rs 1,150 including shipping."
- The customer scans, pays and sends a screenshot.
- Rekha checks her own bank or UPI app, not just the screenshot, to confirm the money arrived.
- She notes the payment against the order and ships.
Step 4 matters. A screenshot can be wrong or edited. Always look at your own account.
Where it gets tiring
This is a manual process. Each order needs you to watch for the payment, match it to the right person and remember who paid. With a few orders a week that is fine. With dozens, mistakes creep in. Why selling in Instagram DMs stops working describes the strain.
UPI on your store
I checked the Varchas code to see what is supported. Online payments run through Cashfree, which lets shoppers pay at checkout, and the admin also lets you record payment methods on orders you enter manually, including UPI as a direct method. So you can record a WhatsApp order paid via your own QR as paid, which marking WhatsApp orders as already paid via UPI walks through. Tips for sellers
- Use a UPI ID or QR connected to an account in your business or your own name, and keep it consistent.
- Put the exact amount in your message so there is no confusion.
- Ask the customer to include their name or order number in the payment note.
- Record each payment the same day.
- Never ship before you see the money in your own app.
UPI versus a gateway
Taking UPI directly costs you nothing extra from a platform, but it costs time. A gateway takes the matching work off you. Neither is right for every seller, so pick what suits your volume. What is a payment gateway explains the other side.
Next step
Take a screenshot of your UPI QR, add your brand name above it and save it in your phone gallery as a ready-to-send image.
