What is guest checkout? (and why forcing sign-up costs sales)
Guest checkout lets a buyer pay without creating an account, and for first-time buyers on a new store it removes a hurdle you may not realise is there.
The meaning
Guest checkout means a shopper can place an order without registering. They give a name, phone, address and payment, and they are done. No password, no account to verify, no profile to fill.
The opposite is forced sign-up: the buyer must create an account or log in before they can pay.
A first-time buyer
Imagine Rohan sees your lamp on Instagram. He taps through to your store, adds it to his bag and goes to pay. Suddenly he is asked to create an account. He has never heard of your brand. He is on his phone, in a queue, with one hand free.
Some buyers will push through. Some will think "later" and never return. I cannot give you numbers, since they differ across stores, and I will not invent any. But the reasoning is plain: an account asks for effort and trust before the buyer has received anything.
Why sellers still ask for an account
There are real benefits to accounts.
- Saved addresses make the second purchase quicker.
- Order history is easier to find.
- A wishlist and saved bag follow the buyer across devices.
- You get a stable identity for repeat customers.
So the question is not account good, guest bad. It is when to ask. A common pattern is to let the buyer pay first and offer an account afterwards, once they have trust in you.
What Varchas does today
I checked the checkout code. In Varchas Stores, guest checkout is a setting. It is off unless the store owner switches it on in settings. When it is off, a shopper who reaches checkout without signing in sees a sign-in or create-account step first, and their bag is kept so they do not lose it. When the owner turns it on, a shopper can place an order without logging in, and fields start empty since a guest has no saved details. The order still gets its own order page, reachable by its link.
So whether you force sign-up is your choice. If your visitors mostly arrive cold from Instagram, think carefully about leaving guest checkout off.
What to think about before choosing
- How do your buyers arrive? Cold social traffic usually favours fewer steps. Repeat customers may like saved details.
- What can you do without an account? You still collect the phone number and address on the order, so you can message them.
- How will they find their order later? Share the order link in your confirmation message. See sharing an order link with customers.
- How will you bring them back? Use a thank-you message and a polite invitation to create an account for faster next time, if you wish.
Permission matters
Collecting a phone number for the order is not the same as permission to send marketing. Ask clearly for what you will do with it. The post on getting customer permission for WhatsApp updates shows how.
Related checkout habits
Fewer fields help too. Ask only for what the courier and you truly need. For the rest of the page, see what a checkout page is and what an abandoned cart is.
The takeaway
Guest checkout lets people buy before committing to an account. In Varchas it is an owner setting that starts off, so switch it on if you want the shortest path for first-time buyers.
