How do I get a first-time buyer to buy a second time?

A good second purchase starts with a good first experience, followed by a few kind messages; this post lays out what to send and what to leave alone.

The second order starts at the first

People rarely come back to a store that disappointed them. So before any message or offer, check the basics: was the parcel on time, was the product as shown, did the customer know where her order was? If those are in place, a follow-up has something to build on.

If your customer gets emails on order updates, she already hears from you without extra effort; see do customers get emails on status update.

Message one: confirm it arrived

When the tracking says delivered, wait a day, then send a short message: "Hi Anjali, your order should have reached you. Is everything fine?" This is not a sales message. It invites her to tell you about any problem, so you can fix it early.

Message two: help her use the product well

A few days later, share one useful tip about the product. If you sell a candle, tell her how to get an even burn. If you sell a notebook, show a nice way to organise a week. This makes her feel looked after, and it reminds her of your brand.

How to include care instructions with your product has ideas that double as these tips.

Message three: a gentle suggestion

After she has had time to try the product, mention one item that goes with it, once, without pressure. "If you like the lavender soap, a few people also enjoy the matching bath salts. No hurry, just sharing." Then stop. If she answers, help her. If she does not, let it rest.

Use a code, with limits

A thank-you code for her next order can nudge her. In the Varchas admin, the Coupons screen lets you set a percentage or fixed amount, a use limit and an expiry date, so the code is not open-ended. Set a minimum that works with your margins, and use coupon minimum order value maths to check it.

Make it easy to order again

Send the link to your store in the message, or a short way to reply with her choice if she prefers WhatsApp. The less effort, the better. If she orders through chat, you can create an offline WhatsApp order so it is still recorded properly.

Know when to stay quiet

If a customer had a problem and you refunded her, do not send a promotional message the next day. Wait, and when you do reach out, make it about her, not about your offer.

Do not quote numbers

You may hear that a certain share of customers buy twice. Ignore it. Your category, price and audience are your own. The only figure that matters is how many of your own first-time buyers order again, which you can count from your orders list every month.

The big picture

A second purchase is a sign of trust. Treat it as the result of many small kindnesses, not one clever trick. The longer story is in the repeat customer is the whole business.
