How do I write an Instagram bio that explains what I sell in a line?

A simple four-part bio formula covering what you sell, who it is for, where you are and how to order, with before and after examples.

Someone lands on your profile from a friend's story. They have about three seconds to figure out what you sell. A bio is not a poem. It is a signboard. If a stranger cannot tell what your shop does from the bio alone, they scroll away, even if your products are lovely.

The four-part formula

Fit these into the space you have.

  1. What you sell.
  2. Who it is for, or what makes it special.
  3. Where you are, or where you ship.
  4. How to order.

You do not need fancy words. Plain nouns are the best.

Before and after

Before: - Dreamer. Maker. Lover of all things beautiful.

After: - Hand-poured soy candles - For gifting and home - Made in Kochi, shipping across India - Order at the link below

The second one tells a stranger everything. The first tells them about you, not what you sell. You can put personality in the second one too, by adding one human touch such as "made in small batches in my kitchen" if it is true.

Name field matters

Your profile name field is separate from the bio. Put what you sell in it too, such as "Anita's Candles | Soy Candles". Keep your handle simple. The name field is easy to forget and it is something people see in many places.

Say who it is for

"For kids" or "for new mothers" or "for office wear" narrows things in a good way. A narrow description helps the right buyer say "that is for me". It does not shut anyone out who wants to buy anyway.

Where you are and where you ship

Buyers want to know if you can reach them. If you ship pan-India, say it. If you only deliver within your city, say that. A clear "Hyderabad only" is better than a confused buyer later. Do not claim delivery to places you do not serve.

The how-to-order line

Tell them the next step in a verb. "Order at the link below" or "Shop via the link". If you accept orders on WhatsApp, say so plainly, but remember the store link is where the product details and checkout live. The case for sending people to one place is in what to put in your Instagram link in bio.

Keep it honest and current

If you pause orders for a festival or a trip, change the bio that day. A bio that says "ordering open" when it is closed wastes your time and the buyer's. Review it monthly, the same time you review your pinned posts.

Check it with a stranger

Show your bio to a friend who does not know your shop. Ask them what you sell and where you are. If they cannot answer in five seconds, rewrite. I will not claim any bio structure raises your sales. What I can say is that a clear bio removes a reason for a stranger to leave.

After the bio, the next stop is the link and your pinned posts. Walk the whole path in from Instagram bio to your first order, and make sure each step flows into the next.
