Reviews on your store or social proof screenshots, which builds trust?

Screenshots of chats are quick and personal but easy to doubt, while reviews on your own store are controlled and lasting, so use each for what it does best.

Almost every Instagram seller has a highlight full of customer chat screenshots. Meanwhile a proper store can show reviews on each product page. Which one earns more trust, and do you need both?

What screenshots are good at

Screenshots feel immediate and human. A real message with a real tone, sent to you on WhatsApp, shows that someone spoke up unprompted. They cost nothing and take a minute to post. They also fit the platform: people scrolling Instagram expect them.

Where they fall short

Screenshots have a few weaknesses worth knowing about.

  • Authenticity. Anyone can crop or edit an image, and shoppers know it. A screenshot asks the viewer to simply believe you.
  • Control. They live in your highlights, not on the page where someone decides to buy. A buyer on your product page may never see them.
  • Upkeep. Highlights get buried and need regular tidying. Old ones go stale.
  • Privacy. You are showing a customer's name and chat, so you should ask permission and hide details.

What store reviews add

Reviews on the product page sit exactly where the decision happens. They are tied to a specific product, so a buyer can read what people thought about the item in front of them. In Varchas Stores, a customer can leave a review from their order page, and the review waits as Pending in your admin until you publish or reject it. You decide what appears. You can also add a review yourself with a reviewer name, rating, date and text, which is meant for genuine feedback you received elsewhere, such as a message from a real buyer. Never invent one. Our post on why you should never fake reviews explains the risk.

The upkeep question

Reviews need a little attention: someone must approve them, thank the writers, and reply politely to unhappy ones. See how to reply to a negative review professionally. That is real, but small, work once a week.

I will not claim that reviews raise your sales by some amount, because I have no such figure. What I can say is that they put customer voices where buying decisions are made.

Use them together

The two are not rivals. Each has a different job.

  • Use screenshots on Instagram to show warmth and personality.
  • Use store reviews on product pages to give specific, lasting evidence.
  • Turn good screenshots into reviews by asking the customer if they would post the same words on your store.

You can send a gentle request after delivery. Our review request templates for WhatsApp give you wording to start from.

If you have no reviews yet

Do not wait for perfection. Start with the few customers you already have, ask kindly, and be patient. What to do when you have no reviews yet covers the gaps in the meantime.

A simple rule

Treat screenshots as a conversation starter and reviews as the record. Keep the first fresh and the second honest, and let each do the work it suits.
