Own domain or free subdomain, is paying for a domain worth it?
A free address gets you started but a domain of your own is easier to remember, gives you matching email and stays with you if you ever change platforms.
When you first set up a store, a free address is tempting. It costs nothing and works today. A domain of your own costs money every year. So is it worth paying? Here is how to think it through without hype.
What the two look like
A free subdomain usually looks like yourstore.platformname.com. A domain you own looks like yourbrand.in. Both can load the same store. The difference is who controls the address and how it looks to a customer.
Brand recall
Say your brand name out loud to someone, then ask them to type your address. A short address that matches your brand is easy to remember and easy to say on a reel. A longer one with a platform's name in the middle is harder, and customers may mistype it. Over time, people who remember your brand name should be able to guess your web address.
Email addresses
With your own domain you can have an address like hello@yourbrand.in. A free subdomain generally does not give you that. When you write to customers or to a courier, an address that matches your brand reads as more settled than a general mail address. This is a matter of impression, not a guarantee of trust, so do not oversell it to yourself.
Portability
This is the point many people miss. If your whole marketing, printed cards and Instagram bio point to an address owned by someone else, moving later means changing all of it, and old links break. A domain you own can be pointed at a different store or host without your customers noticing. You keep the address even if the platform changes. See own your domain, own your brand and your brand on its own domain.
What I am not claiming
I will not tell you a domain improves search rankings, because I cannot support that. I also will not quote a price, since it varies by name and seller. Check current prices from a registrar yourself and compare a few, including the renewal price.
When free is fine
- You are testing an idea and have not got a first sale.
- You are still choosing a name.
- You want to learn the system before spending.
When to buy a domain
- Your brand name is settled and you are printing it on packaging.
- You want a branded email address.
- You are spending money on ads or creators and sending them to your link.
Practical tips
- Choose a name that is short and easy to spell over the phone.
- Buy it in your own name or business name, and keep the login safe.
- Set a reminder so it does not expire by accident.
- Read what is a custom domain so you know what connecting it involves.
My advice is to start free if money is tight, but treat the domain as a near-term step. The earlier you use your own address in public, the less you have to unwind later.
