What is address validation? (and how bad addresses cause returns)

Address validation means checking that a delivery address is complete and usable before dispatch, because a small gap such as a missing flat number can send a parcel back.

The meaning

Address validation is the habit, or the software feature, of checking an address before a parcel leaves. Is the pincode six digits? Is the pincode one the courier serves? Is there a house or flat number? Is there a way to find the building?

It is a safety check. Its goal is to catch a problem while the buyer is still happy to answer, not after a courier has made two failed visits.

A flat-number example

Say a buyer orders a kurta and types the address as: "Green Park Residency, Kondapur, Hyderabad 500084". Looks fine. But Green Park Residency may have hundreds of flats. There is no block, no flat number, no phone-friendly landmark.

The courier reaches the gate. The security guard asks which flat. The delivery person calls the buyer, who is at work and does not pick up. After a few attempts the parcel is marked undeliverable and begins its return journey.

You have paid shipping, possibly twice, and the buyer still has no parcel. The post on what RTO is and why it hurts explains the cost.

What a good check looks for

  • Pincode: six digits, and the right area for the city.
  • House, flat or door number.
  • Building or society name, and block or floor if relevant.
  • Street or locality.
  • A landmark, such as a nearby shop or temple.
  • A working phone number, ideally one that is reachable on WhatsApp.

What Varchas does today

I checked the checkout code. Varchas Stores requires a valid six-digit pincode, and it can check whether a pincode is deliverable while the shopper is still at checkout, including whether it takes cash on delivery. There is also an optional landmark field, which is added to the saved address as a "near" line. Beyond that, I did not find automatic checks of flat numbers or street names, so a human check by you is still worthwhile. The post on pincode serviceability explains the pincode side.

A five-minute manual check

Before you pack, scan each address:

  • Does it have a number for the door?
  • Could someone find this place with only these words?
  • Does the pincode match the city?
  • Is the phone number ten digits?

If anything is missing, message the buyer right away. A friendly line works: "Hi, quick check before we dispatch. Could you share your flat number and a nearby landmark so the courier finds you easily?" The post on how to verify a customer address before dispatch gives more templates.

The takeaway

Address validation is catching gaps before dispatch. Let the store check the pincode, and add your own quick look for door numbers and landmarks.
