How can I run a referral idea for my store without apps?
You can run a friend-referral offer with a coupon code, a notebook and WhatsApp, and this post shows the simple steps and the traps to avoid.

You do not need a referral app
When a customer tells a friend about your store, you already have a referral. All you add is a small thank-you, and a way to remember who sent whom. For a tiny store, a notebook or a spreadsheet is enough.
The simplest setup
Create one coupon code per referring customer. Something like the customer's first name plus a number works, for example PRIYA10. Give her the code and tell her to share it with a friend.
In the Varchas admin, the Coupons screen lets you set a code, choose whether it is a percentage or a fixed rupee amount, set a value, limit the number of uses, set an expiry date and switch it on or off. That gives you what you need for each referral code without any extra tool.
Then, whenever an order comes in using that code, you know who referred the buyer.
What the friend gets
Decide what the new customer receives. A modest discount on a first order is normal. Keep the discount small enough that you still make money; the arithmetic in coupon minimum order value maths helps you set a floor so the code does not eat your margin.
What the referrer gets
Do not give the reward at the moment of sharing. Give it after the friend's order has been delivered and not returned. Otherwise you can end up paying for orders that never completed. The reward could be a thank-you note with her next parcel, a small credit, or a code of her own. How to reward customers who refer friends compares those options in more depth.
Track it by hand
Keep a sheet with four columns:
- Referrer name and her code
- Date of each use
- Order number
- Reward given, yes or no
Check it once a week when you do your regular order review. It takes minutes, and it makes sure you do not forget anyone or pay twice.
Limit the code
Set a maximum number of uses on each code, and an expiry date, so a code shared in a big WhatsApp group does not run away from you. You can always extend it. If a code starts being used by people nobody knows, switch it off and offer the referrer a new one.
Be honest in the message
A message to send:
"Hi Priya, thank you for ordering from us. If you know a friend who might like our products, here is a code for her first order. When she orders, I will send you a small thank-you too. There is no pressure at all."
No claims, no pressure. It reads like a person, not a campaign.
Do not promise results
A referral idea may bring in two buyers or none; there is no number you can count on. Treat each one as a bonus. If it works well, consider upgrading to proper tracked links through affiliates and referral links for your store, which suits people who will share your store more regularly.
