What reward works when a customer refers a friend?
Store credit, a small gift or a coupon can all thank a referrer; here is how each one affects your cash and which fits a small Indian seller.

Decide the reward before you ask
A customer who brings you a friend has done real work: she has put her own name behind your product. Thank her in a way that is fair to her and affordable to you. There are three common options, and each has a different cost shape.
Option one: a coupon for her next order
A coupon is the easiest. She gets a code for her next purchase, and you only pay if she orders again. In the Varchas admin you can create a coupon as a percentage or a fixed rupee amount, with a maximum number of uses and an expiry date, which keeps the cost contained.
The catch is that a coupon only rewards people who plan to buy again soon. A customer who bought a once-in-a-while item, such as a gift, may feel a coupon is not much of a thanks.
Option two: a small gift
A gift costs you a fixed amount, paid whenever you send it. Say you give a mini product that costs you Rs 25 to make and pack. If you send it to forty referrers in a year, that is Rs 1,000, easy to plan.
Gifts feel personal, but they add packing work and, for food or skincare, safety checks. Look at how to offer a small free sample with orders before you pick a gift that goes on skin or in the mouth.
Option three: store credit or a cash reward
Credit works like a coupon but is stored against her name. You must keep a record and honour it. Without software, that means a sheet you update carefully. A direct cash payment is simple but turns the referral into a paid arrangement, which is closer to what an affiliate does; if that is where you are heading, read affiliates and referral links for your store.
Should both sides get something
A reward for both the referrer and the friend feels fair, and it gives the friend a reason to try you. But you pay twice, so test the arithmetic on one order first. Take an order of Rs 800 where the friend gets Rs 80 off and the referrer gets a Rs 50 coupon. Your cost per referred order is Rs 130, before packing and shipping. Ask whether your margin on a Rs 800 order covers that.
Timing matters
Pay or give the reward after the friend's order has been delivered and the return window has passed. This prevents you rewarding orders that are later cancelled. Cancellations, refunds and restocking explains the usual patterns.
Write the rule down
Put the rule in one short message so there is no confusion: what the friend gets, what the referrer gets, and when. Keep a sheet of who referred whom, and update it weekly.
What not to promise
Do not tell customers that referrals pay off in any fixed way, and do not copy a reward size from another brand as if it were proven. You do not know their numbers. Start small, try one reward for a month, and look at your own orders. If the cost per new customer feels too high, shrink the reward or change its form.
Whichever you choose, say thank you in your own words. A short voice note or handwritten line often means more than the reward itself.
