How do you build a Pongal gift hamper from your own products?

Build a Pongal hamper by picking items that belong together, packing them to survive transit, and checking that the price covers box, labour and a margin.

A hamper is a good way to sell a few of your products together as a gift. You do not need to invent anything new. You need a clear idea, sturdy packing and a price that does not quietly lose you money.

Pick a theme before you pick products

Start with a single idea for the hamper, then choose items that fit it. A theme gives the buyer an easy story to tell. For example, a hamper for a family home, one for a colleague, or one for a new household. Avoid throwing together unrelated items just to reach a price.

Choose a small number of products. Three to five items usually feel complete without being crowded. Pick one hero item that you are proud of, a supporting item or two, and a small extra such as a card.

Check compatibility

Walk through the practical issues before you commit.

  • Do any items leak, melt or crush others? Keep food, oils and fragile goods apart.
  • Do the items have similar shelf life, so one does not expire long before the others?
  • Will the hamper stay within a sensible weight for shipping?
  • Can each item be restocked in time if the hamper sells well?

The pricing check

Hamper pricing should be arithmetic, not hope. Add up what each item costs you to make or buy, then add the box, filler, card and your packing time. Compare that to the price you plan to charge.

An example with invented numbers. Item costs of Rs 90, Rs 70 and Rs 40 total Rs 200. A box, filler and card add Rs 50, and packing time is Rs 20. Total cost is Rs 270. If you sell the hamper at Rs 499, you keep Rs 229 before shipping. If shipping costs you Rs 90 and the customer pays Rs 60 of that, subtract the Rs 30 you absorb, leaving Rs 199. Run your own numbers through the same steps. More detail is in gift set pricing with box and labour and bundle price versus separate price profit.

Offer two sizes

A smaller and a larger hamper let buyers choose by budget without you having to negotiate each one. Keep the contents of the smaller one a subset of the larger, so you do not need extra stock.

Pack for the journey

Use a rigid box, snug filler and a tight lid. Place heavy items at the bottom and stop anything from sliding. Pack one sample, drop-test it gently and see what moves. For a deeper look at materials, see choosing packaging material for small sellers.

Manage stock for bundles

Every hamper uses units of each item, so selling many can leave single items out of stock. Set a cap on hampers you will make, based on the stock you can spare. Keep your counts current with a weekly stock count.

Present it clearly

Photograph the full hamper from above, then each item close up. List every item and its size in the description so there are no surprises. Tell buyers your cut-off and expected dispatch window. Not stating exact festival dates here, but do check them yourself on a calendar when you plan.

Test with a few first

Offer the hamper to a small group on WhatsApp first and gather their comments on contents and price. Adjust, then announce it widely.
