What should I do about a rude comment on my Instagram post?
Sort rude comments into real complaints, honest criticism and plain trolling, then reply, hide or ignore each one on purpose instead of reacting in the heat of the moment.

Not every unkind comment is the same
The first mistake sellers make is treating every negative comment as an attack. Some are real customers with a real problem. Some are honest opinions, bluntly worded. And some are people who just want attention. Each needs a different response, so take a breath and sort it.
Ask three questions. Is this a customer of mine? Is there a genuine issue behind it? Is it abusive, or only critical?
Type one: a real complaint
A comment such as "I ordered two weeks ago and have heard nothing" is a customer asking for help in public. This is the one to answer, and quickly, because other followers are watching how you respond.
Reply briefly, politely and without details.
"Hi Anjali, I am sorry about this. Please message me your order details and I will check right away."
Then move it to a private chat and sort it out. Once solved, you may add a short public note that it is resolved. Our post on replying to a negative review professionally uses the same calm pattern.
Type two: honest criticism
"Too expensive for what it is" is not rude, it is an opinion. You do not need to defend your price in a comment. If you wish, answer once with a plain fact such as "Thank you for the feedback. Each piece is handmade and takes about two days, which is reflected in the price." Then leave it. Arguing in public rarely helps.
If the criticism points to something you can fix, such as unclear sizing, note it and thank them.
Type three: abuse or trolling
If a comment is insulting, threatening or deliberately provocative, you owe the person no reply. Do not engage, do not debate and do not match their tone. Check your own app's current options for hiding or removing comments, restricting accounts or filtering certain words, as these tools and where they live can change, and use whichever suits you.
Protect your community too. If other followers are being harassed in your comments, step in and take the comment down.
Type four: false claims
A comment that wrongly says your product is fake, unsafe or a scam is trickier. Stay factual and calm.
"We are sorry to hear this. We would like to understand what happened. Please message us your order details."
Do not accuse the person of lying. If you truly believe it is false and harmful, keep screenshots and consider whether you need to report it through the platform's own reporting options. For anything involving legal questions, speak to a professional rather than guess.
Rules of thumb
- Wait before replying. Never answer within the first few minutes if you are upset.
- Reply as the brand, not as an angry individual, even when it is personal.
- Keep replies short. Long defences look defensive.
- Move specifics to private messages.
- Do not delete honest criticism just because it is uncomfortable. Deleting everything negative can look dishonest.
Make a small plan in advance
Write down, for yourself, which comments you will reply to, hide or ignore. If you work with a helper or a family member who posts on your behalf, share it with them so you are all consistent.
Keep your energy for the people who matter
Most of your followers are either happy customers or curious browsers. A few rude comments are small next to that. Spend your effort on posts that show your product honestly and on replying warmly to people who ask real questions. A calm, steady presence is the best answer to noise.
