How do I get photo reviews of my products?

Customers send photos when you make it specific and easy, so ask a small, concrete question like how it fits or how it looks at home, and always ask permission before sharing.

Why people do not send photos

Most customers are not refusing. They simply do not know what you want. "Send a photo" feels like homework. They worry the picture is not good enough, the room is messy, or they would have to dress up. Your job is to make the ask small and specific.

Think of it as inviting a customer to show you something, not to produce content for you.

Ask a specific question

A vague request gets silence. A specific one gets a picture. Compare these.

  • Vague: "Please share a photo review."
  • Specific: "Would you send me a quick photo of the kurta on a hanger so I can see how the colour looks in your light?"

Match the question to the product.

  • Clothing: how it fits, or a photo of the label and fabric close up.
  • Home decor: the item in its place in the room.
  • Food: the jar or pack opened on a plate.
  • Jewellery: worn, or next to everyday objects for scale.
  • Bags: with the things they actually carry in it.

Questions about fit, size or colour also help you. Your next customer can see what the product looks like on a real person or in a real home, which is something your own photos cannot show.

Put the ask in the right message

Do it in the same personal follow-up where you check how the product is going. Mention the product by name. Make it clear that a messy background is fine and that a phone photo is perfect.

"Hi Meena, hope the cushion covers are looking nice. If you are happy to, a quick photo of them on your sofa would be lovely. No need for it to be perfect, a normal phone photo is great."

Always ask permission

A customer who sends you a photo has shared it with you, not with the public. Before you put it on your store, your Instagram or anywhere else, ask plainly, "May I share this photo on my page? I can tag you or keep your name private, whichever you prefer."

Wait for a clear yes. If you cannot tell, treat it as a no. Some photos show faces, children, homes or addresses, and you should never post those without consent. Crop out anything personal, such as a parcel label or a nameplate.

Make it easy to respond

Customers can reply with a photo in the same chat, which is the lowest effort route. If your store lets customers rate their items from their order page, you can mention that too, but for photos the chat is often simpler. Whichever way they choose, thank them straight away and tell them what you will do with it.

Do not reward or script it

Do not tell customers what to say or pose them. Do not offer payment or gifts for a photo, because that changes what you are asking for, and rules around that differ depending on where it is posted. If you ever consider such a scheme, check the relevant rules first.

Also do not edit the photo to make the product look better than it did. Light cropping for privacy is fine. Filters that change the colour are not. Our post on using customer reviews on Instagram without faking anything goes deeper into what is fair.

Say thank you in a lasting way

When you share a customer's photo, tag them if they agreed, and send them a message with the link. People are pleased to be featured, and it makes them more likely to send another photo next time.

Start with a few

You do not need dozens. Ask five recent customers this week, with a specific question each. Even a handful of real photos helps a new shopper imagine owning the product, and they sit well alongside the customer reviews on your own store.
