How do I move Instagram followers onto an email list?

Followers will share an email address only if you give them a clear reason; this post covers what to offer, where to place the sign-up, and how to keep it honest.

Why bother

Your Instagram account is on rented ground. You do not control who sees your posts, and you cannot export a follower list. An email list is yours; you can reach those people when you have news. Why email still beats every other channel for repeat sales goes into the thinking, and building an email list from day one covers the basics.

This post is about the next step: how to get your existing followers across.

Give a reason to sign up

Nobody joins a list because you asked. They join because they get something. Pick one clear reason that suits your products:

  • First look at new products before they go public
  • A short monthly note with a recipe, styling idea or care tip
  • A reminder when a sold-out favourite is back
  • A small code on a first order, if you can afford it

Say what the reason is in a single sentence. "Get a note when our new batch is ready" is clearer than "Join our newsletter".

Where to place the sign-up

You can only place a link in a few spots on Instagram, so use them well.

  • Your bio link: point it to your store or a page that includes the sign-up
  • Stories: a short story saying "Want first access to the next batch? Link is in my bio", repeated now and then
  • Captions: end a useful post with one line about the list
  • Replies and DMs: when someone asks "when will this be back", answer and offer to let them know by email

If your store has a coming-soon page, the Early Access screen in the Varchas admin collects an email and mobile number and lets you export the list. You can use that to hold sign-ups before you open.

Ask for the minimum

Ask for an email address. Add a name only if you will really use it. Every extra field loses people.

Tell people what they will get

Right near the box, write how often you will write and what it will be about. If you say once a month, do that. People forgive a quiet list; they do not forgive surprises.

Be careful about permissions

Collect addresses only from people who choose to give them. Do not add someone because they commented or followed. The rules on consent can differ, so check the current requirements with a professional rather than relying on a blog post.

Do not promise results

Do not assume a fixed share of followers will sign up; you will learn your own figure. Count sign-ups per week and notice which story or caption brought the most.

Keep it up

Mention the list in one story every week or two. Share a screenshot of a past note so people see what they would get. And when someone joins, send a welcome message soon, as described in what to send in your first welcome email.
