What is a flash sale? (and how to run one small)
A flash sale is a short, clearly timed offer, and a small seller can run one safely by capping stock, fixing the discount from cost and ending it on time.

What it is
A flash sale is a discount that lasts for a short, announced window, often a few hours or a day. The short window is the whole point. Shoppers who were thinking "maybe later" get a clear reason to decide now, and you get a burst of orders you can plan for.
For a home brand it does not need to be loud or complicated. One product, one price, one deadline.
A 24-hour example
Say you make hand-poured candles. One 200 g candle sells for Rs 599 and costs you Rs 250 to make and pack.
You decide on a 24-hour sale at Rs 499, starting Friday at 8 pm and ending Saturday at 8 pm. Check the arithmetic before you announce.
- Normal margin: Rs 599 minus Rs 250 is Rs 349.
- Sale margin: Rs 499 minus Rs 250 is Rs 249.
- Each sale gives up Rs 100 compared with normal.
Now decide how many you can afford at that thinner margin. If you only want to give away at most Rs 2,000 in discount, that is 20 candles at Rs 100 each. So your stock cap for the sale is 20 units. Say it openly: "Only 20 at this price." A real limit is honest and also easier on you.
Set the guardrails first
- Stock cap: decide the number of units before you post. Do not promise more than you hold or can make quickly. Our post on dealing with overselling and out-of-stock orders shows what goes wrong when you do.
- Price floor: know the lowest price you can accept without losing money after packing, payment fees and shipping. The post on profit when selling below list price helps.
- Clear end time: write the exact end time in the post, and stick to it. Extending a sale "because people asked" teaches your customers that deadlines are soft.
- Shipping plan: a spike of orders means a spike of parcels. Block out packing time and book your pickup in advance.
Running it on your store
On Varchas Stores you can create a coupon with a maximum number of uses and an expiry date, which together act as your cap and your deadline. In the admin Coupons screen the code accepts letters and numbers only, and you can switch it off with the active toggle if you want to end early. Another approach is to edit the product price for the window and set it back afterwards, but remember to restore it. Either way, watch the clock yourself, because the store will not announce the sale for you.
Announce it where your customers are
Tell your WhatsApp contacts and Instagram followers once before it starts and once when it is nearly over. Keep each message short: what it is, the price, how many, until when. For wording ideas see WhatsApp broadcast templates for new drops.
After it ends
- Count units sold, total discount given and any new customers.
- Note which message brought the most orders.
- Check delivery and return outcomes a few weeks later.
- Decide whether the sale paid for itself, using your own numbers.
Do not promise results to yourself. A flash sale can fall flat as easily as it can work. Keep the first one small, learn from it, and run the next one with better numbers.
