Launch with a sale or at full price, which first impression to make

A launch discount can bring early orders but may anchor customers to a low price, while full price signals confidence but needs patience, so plan the exit before you start.

Opening day for a new store or product is a strange mix of excitement and fear. The question is usually whether to offer a launch discount to get things moving or hold the price from day one. I cannot tell you which converts better, and neither can anyone without your data. What I can do is lay out the trade-offs.

The case for a launch discount

A lower price gives hesitant people a reason to try you now. Early orders mean early photos, early feedback and your first reviews, all of which help the next buyer. For a brand nobody has heard of, a small discount can ease the risk the customer feels.

The case against

Price is a signal. If the first price people see is low, that low number becomes the anchor, and the real price can feel like an increase later. You may also attract buyers who only come for deals and do not return at full price. And your margin shrinks exactly when you have the least data on your true costs.

Launching at full price keeps your margin intact and says the product is worth it. The risk is slower early traction, which can feel discouraging.

Check the maths before choosing

Say a product costs you Rs 300 to make, pack and ship, and the full price is Rs 500. You earn Rs 200 per order. A 20 percent discount brings the price to Rs 400, and your earning falls to Rs 100, half the amount. You would need twice as many orders just to earn the same. Run your own numbers with break-even price for a new product launch and see how festival sale discounts need extra units works, since the same arithmetic applies.

Options between the extremes

You are not forced to pick a pole.

  • A small, time-limited offer to your first group of followers only, such as the people on your WhatsApp list.
  • A free gift or small sample instead of a price cut, which protects your listed price. See free gift versus discount.
  • A discount code for early supporters that you can switch off, rather than a lowered listed price.

Keeping the listed price at full value and using a code is often cleaner. In Varchas Stores you can create coupons in the admin, and a code can be ended when you decide the launch period is over, while the product price stays unchanged.

How to end a launch offer gracefully

Decide the end before you begin.

  1. State the deadline in the announcement, as a number of days or a stock limit.
  2. Remind people once as it nears its end, honestly.
  3. Remove the code when the time is up and do not quietly bring it back.
  4. Tell early buyers that this was a launch price so they understand it was special.

If you keep extending the offer, people learn that the sale is the real price.

Choosing for your situation

If you have a warm audience that already trusts you, full price is likely enough. If you are starting from zero and need first reviews, a modest, clearly limited offer might make sense. Either way, write down what you want the launch to achieve, such as the first ten orders, then judge by that and not by mood.
