How WOW Skin Science started
WOW Skin Science built its business around natural, chemical-free personal care sold directly online at prices closer to mainstream products.
WOW Skin Science was founded by Manish Chowdhary along with his co-founders in the mid-2010s, entering a personal care market where natural and chemical-free products existed but were often priced well beyond what an average Indian household would spend.
The problem they saw
Natural and "clean" personal care products were available in India, but many came from premium niche brands with prices that put them out of reach for a large segment of budget-conscious buyers who might otherwise have preferred them. At the same time, mainstream, affordable personal care brands rarely emphasised natural formulations or avoided common synthetic additives. WOW's founders saw an opening to combine natural, chemical-free formulations with pricing that did not require customers to pay a steep premium for it.
What they sold first
WOW Skin Science launched with haircare and skincare products, including oils and shampoos, formulated around natural ingredients and free from certain common synthetic additives, while priced to compete with mainstream, not just premium, personal care brands. This combination of natural positioning at accessible pricing was central to the brand's identity from the very beginning.
The decisions that mattered
Selling primarily through online marketplaces let WOW reach a wide, price-sensitive customer base directly, without the higher costs and slower rollout that traditional retail distribution across physical stores would have required for a new entrant.
Keeping prices closer to mainstream products, rather than adopting the premium pricing common among natural personal care brands at the time, widened the audience the brand could realistically reach, rather than limiting itself to a smaller segment of affluent, values-driven buyers.
The company built a wide catalogue across haircare, skincare, and personal care fairly early, using online retail's lower distribution barriers to test many products and let customer response guide which ones to expand.

What a small brand can take from this
A gap does not always need to be about a completely new idea — sometimes it is about making an existing good idea, like natural formulation, accessible to customers who were previously priced out of it.
Pricing strategy is itself a form of positioning. Choosing to compete on accessibility rather than premium exclusivity can open up a much larger customer base for the same basic product idea.
Online marketplaces can let a new brand test a wide range of products quickly and cheaply, which is especially useful when you are still learning which combination of positioning and pricing will resonate with customers.
If you want to build direct pricing and positioning around your own customers, you can start with early access.
