How do I suggest a second product without sounding pushy?

Use pairing language such as goes well with, offer once, and know when to stay silent; here are phrases that feel like advice instead of selling.

Think like a friend who knows the product

Nobody minds advice from someone who knows the product well. They mind being pushed. The difference is in how you frame it: you are sharing what you know, not trying to raise the bill.

The question to ask yourself before every suggestion is simple: would I mention this to a friend who bought it? If yes, say it. If you are suggesting it only because it is on your shelf, skip it.

Use pairing language

Phrases that sound like help:

  • "This goes well with..."
  • "A lot of people use this alongside..."
  • "If you like this, you may enjoy..."
  • "One thing that works nicely together is..."

Avoid phrases that sound like pressure:

  • "You must also buy..."
  • "Do not miss..."
  • "Last chance for..."
  • "You need this too."

Avoid "a lot of people" if you cannot back it up. If only one or two customers did it, say "a customer of mine tried this and liked it", which is true and still friendly.

Offer once, then stop

One mention is advice. Two is a sales pitch. After you suggest the pairing, let the customer decide. If she ignores it, do not ask again in the same chat.

Match the suggestion to the first product

A suggestion should solve a small need that the first product creates or complements.

  • Someone buys a plain notebook: suggest a pen or a pouch
  • Someone buys a hair oil: suggest a wide-tooth comb or a scalp massager, if you sell those
  • Someone buys a saree: suggest a blouse piece or a petticoat, if relevant
  • Someone buys a gift box: suggest a greeting card

If you cannot connect the two products in a sentence, they are not a pair.

Where to put the suggestion

  • In a WhatsApp chat, as a reply after she confirms her order
  • On a thank-you card inside the parcel, a line about what pairs with the item
  • In your product descriptions, a short "pairs well with" note

If you put it in the product description on your store, make sure the paired item is in stock before you mention it. Overselling creates its own troubles; see dealing with overselling and out-of-stock orders.

When to stay quiet

Stay silent if the customer is upset, if she has mentioned a tight budget, if she is buying a gift in a hurry, or if her order is already large. Also stay silent if you are not sure the second product is good. A bad suggestion costs more trust than a missed sale.

Keep your claims honest

Do not claim that suggestions raise order value for stores in general. You can only observe what happens in your own chats. Notice which pairings customers actually pick and drop the ones nobody wants.

Try a free-gift route instead

If a customer hesitates, a small free item can show the pairing without any pressure; see free gift vs discount: which costs less for the cost side.
