How mCaffeine started
mCaffeine built its personal care line around caffeine as the active ingredient, aimed squarely at young, digitally native Indian buyers.
Tarun Sharma and Vaibhav Dayal co-founded mCaffeine in 2016, choosing caffeine, not as a beverage ingredient but as an active ingredient in skincare and personal care, as the foundation of an entirely new brand.
The problem they saw
The Indian personal care market had brands built around many ingredients — herbal extracts, essential oils, common actives — but almost nothing built specifically around caffeine's benefits for skin and hair, despite caffeine-based skincare having some traction internationally. The founders also saw a broader opportunity in speaking directly to a younger, digitally native audience that existing personal care brands, often built around older, more conservative marketing, had not fully engaged.
What they sold first
mCaffeine launched with caffeine-infused skincare and body care products, including items like body scrubs and face washes, positioned around the energising, antioxidant properties associated with caffeine as an ingredient. The brand built its entire identity around this one distinctive ingredient story, giving it an immediate point of difference from more generic personal care competitors.
The decisions that mattered
Building the brand entirely around a single, distinctive ingredient story gave mCaffeine instant differentiation in a crowded personal care market, where most competitors organised themselves around broad categories like "natural" or "herbal" rather than one specific, memorable active.
The company designed its branding, packaging, and marketing tone specifically for a younger, urban, digitally engaged audience, using energetic visuals and a tone that matched the "wake up and get going" association people already had with caffeine.
mCaffeine sold primarily through online channels and digital marketing, which suited both its target audience's shopping habits and the kind of ingredient-story-driven education the brand needed to do to explain why caffeine belonged in a skincare routine at all.

What a small brand can take from this
Building an entire brand identity around one distinctive, ownable ingredient story can cut through a crowded market faster than trying to compete on broad claims like "natural" that dozens of other brands already use.
Matching your product's core association — energy, in this case — to your branding tone and audience creates a coherent story that customers can grasp quickly, without needing lengthy explanation.
A single strong idea, consistently applied across product, packaging, and marketing, can carry a young brand further than a wide but unfocused catalogue.
If your brand has one strong idea worth building everything around, you can build the store for it with early access.
